This week we have attached the word document of the story.

Note, by request of teachers we have included the answers to the questions immediately following the questions.

Guebert: Withdrawing from KORUS ‘disastous’ for Illinois Farmers

  1.  What does KORUS stand for?   Korean-U.S. Free Trade Agreement
  2. How long has the KORUS agreement been in place?   5 years
  3. What reasons does Illinois Farm Bureau President Richard Guebert give for  working to keep the KORUS agreement in place?  Commodity prices continue to remain below the cost of production, and net farm income is projected to be at the lowest level  in 15 years.  Farmers need every available option for exports.
  4. Define the word duty (as in duty free):  (a tax charged by the government, especially on imports)
  5. Explain what happens for US farmer under the  KORUS Trade Agreement.  (Answers will vary, but should include  two-thirds of US Ag exports to Korea, including wheat, corn and cotton did not get charged an import tax. Because there were fewer taxes on the products, demand climbed.  South Korea now is the second largest market for corn-fed beef and fourth for corn.  Ag exports could reach $7 billion this year from the US To South Korea)
  6. Although Korea has been in the news lately, what is different about this agreement?   Answers will vary but may include: North Korea has been in the news as the socialistic (often refered to as totalitarian state) under President Kim Jong-un has been testing missile launches, further perfecting the launch and missile technology with each attempt.  This agreement is with South Korea, the two countries have been separated the end of World War II.
  7. A treaty that limits duties (import taxes) works both ways.  South Korea is able to send goods to the US as we send goods to South Korea. What benefits and drawbacks do you see with agreement?  Do you think President Trump should remain in the agreement or should the agreement end?  Explain your answer.  (answers will vary)
