Perdue: Farm economy remains fraigle

  1. Last week U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue described the rural economy as fragile  and used the words duress, constituency, resilient and optimistic.  Define each:

(Duress:  pressure, force, threat;  Constituency: electorate, district, population; Resilient: hardy, elastic, strong; Optimistic:  hopeful, positive, bright)

  1.  Farm debt continues to rise, up 22% since 2013 from $315 Billion to $385 Billion.  What other options have farmers used instead of debt to stay in business?  (reduced spending, utilizing savings, loans and off farm-income and assets.  )
  2. What two commodities groups are mentioned to specifically gain a better safety net through the farm bill?  (Cotton and Dairy)
  3. Perdue describe the guest worker program and upcoming immigration debate as one of the most critical issues facing agriculture.   Why does he describe this in that manner? (Answers will vary but should include information about the need for farm workers.  More information can be found at https://www.ers.usda.gov/topics/farm-economy/farm-labor/background.aspx)
  4. Two Representatives from Illinois questioned Perdue on Ag Research and infrastructure improvements.   Why are IL lawmakers interested in these topics?  (Answers will vary!)
