Volunteers Needed to Install Interpretative Signs at Historic Arboretum

Service Day and Tree Jamboree set for October 20

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Oct. 10, 2018) — Scouts, 4-H members, FFA Chapters and ANY organization looking for public service hours are invited to a special service day and tree jamboree hosted by Trees Forever, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Illinois Arborists Association at the Illinois Department of Natural Resources headquarters (Conservation World).

Volunteers are needed to help install interpretative signs on the state fairgrounds at Conservation World on October 20. The installation project is part of an afternoon of fun and educational activities. The event runs from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Media is also invited to attend.

“This is a great opportunity for people to get hands-on lessons about our historic trees and how trees are important to our society,” Trees Forever Program Manager Kevin Bennett said.

The interpretative signs are part of a federal grant, and volunteer labor will help to provide a match for the funding.

“Several years ago, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Division of Forestry, through federal funding from the USDA Forest Service, planted trees purchased from American Forests that were associated with famous or historic people or events thus creating the IDNR Conservation World Famous and Historic Arboretum and Tree Trail,” Illinois State Urban Forestry Administrator Reinee Hildebrandt explains. “Now that the trees are mature, we are placing permanent interpretive signage by the trees. These signs tell the story of the tree and its relationship to fame or history and provide information on tree species and tree care.”

The Jamboree will also include various learning stations with topics including tree care and mulching, foods from the forest, Smokey the Bear frisbee toss, a natural resource hike and other outdoor activities. Many of the stations are designed to help Scouts earn merit badges and teach 4-H and FFA members about various forestry topics.

Groups are encouraged to bring spades/manual post hole diggers, gloves, and to dress for outdoor work. All registered participants will receive a t-shirt and a free lunch from Nuthatch Hill BBQ Co.

Registration is required and must be received by October 17, 2018. Participants are encouraged to register early in order to guarantee their t-shirts. To get an application form, please contact Reinee Hildebrandt, IDNR Division of Forest Resources by emailing or calling (217) 785-8771.

In the case of inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled to October 27. The decision to reschedule will be made by October 19 at 5 p.m. and will be communicated
