2.  Registration open for Cooperative Youth Conference, June 6-7

The 2019 Illinois Cooperative Council Youth Conference will be held June 6-7 on the campus of Western Illinois University in Macomb. High school sophomores, juniors, and seniors are provided a unique opportunity to learn about the cooperative business model. Generous cooperatives from across the state provide sponsorships to offset housing and meal costs, allowing students to attend at no personal expense.

Students learn about the seven cooperative principles and benefits of a cooperative, as well as governance and operation. They also participate in a field trip to see cooperatives in action. Workshops are led by experienced cooperative employees who provide students with insight into important qualities of all types of cooperatives. They also experience a taste of college life by staying in the dorms and relaxing at the student recreation center.

A registration form is available at http://illinois.coop/youth-conference/2019-registration/ and students should register by April 30. A $30 deposit is required and will be refunded when the student arrives at the conference. Teacher in-service training is provided for agriculture instructors who bring students to the conference.

The conference is coordinated by the Illinois Cooperative Council, and WIU’s School of Agriculture. The conference rotates between Southern Illinois University and WIU each year to allow students from across the state the opportunity to attend. More information about the Illinois Cooperative Council is available at www.illinois.coop.

3.  Farm Credit Illinois offers Scholarships, Grants

High school seniors pursuing a career in agriculture are invited to apply for a $2,000 Farm Credit Illinois ag scholarship. Thirty scholarships will be given in 2019, with two recipients designated as “diversity in agriculture” scholars.

Recipients will be selected based on a combination of academic achievement, participation and leadership in school and community organizations, and the applicant’s commitment to an agricultural career. Applicants must be high school seniors enrolling in a college or university during the 2019 fall semester to pursue an agriculture-related academic major and career.

Applicants must reside in — or immediate family must farm in — one of 60 central and southern counties in Illinois served by FCI. Recipients will receive $1,000 for the fall 2019 semester and $1,000 for fall 2021.

Farm Credit Illinois is also giving 50 $500 Community Improvement Grants to 4-H clubs and FFA chapters that are bringing positive change to their local community. Clubs should choose a project that delivers tangible value with a visible outcome.

Online applications for the scholarship and grant programs are available at farmcreditil.com and must be submitted by March 1. In lieu of an essay, students will create a 30- to 45-second video capturing their passion for agriculture. For more information, email ask@farmcreditil.com.

4.  Illinois FFA Center

With extremely cold temperatures this week and potential school closings, many of our staff will be working from home.  We will be checking emails, but as staff are in and out of the office, if you call the FFA Center and do not reach anyone, please be sure to email us your questions or concerns.
